Trendy Cardigan Outfit Roundup

For years, one of the most popular posts on my blog was how to wear cardigans without looking frumpy. It was last updated in October of 2020, and it’s interesting to see how styles have changed since then.

Treasure & Bond cardigan (S) // Gap Factory tank (M) // Paige Anessa (29) – on sale // Marc Fisher boots (8) –  on sale // Frame belt (M) // Jenny Bird earrings & necklace // Gucci crossbody (similar for less)

Usually I would just update that post and republish it, but I actually really like the advice I gave there and the variety of photos I had to illustrate each point, so I’m starting over with a new post from a slightly different angle.

Cardigans have taken a back seat to other sweater styles over the past few seasons, and I haven’t worn them much. Truth be told, I’ve always preferred the ease of a pullover to a cardigan and all of the factors involved with layering and styling them.

But now that cardigans are trending again, I’m enjoying how they add some variety to my winter outfits. That said, cardigan styles and what looks current to me has changed a bit, so let’s discuss!

What Types of Cardigans Are In Style for 2024?

Personally, I’m feeling drawn to the button-up v-neck styles, like the Rails Geneva stripe cardigan I’m wearing above.

I also like this clean oversize cardigan from Treasure & Bond, as it has more of that borrowed-from-the-boys vibe. They are often worn buttoned-up, but they can also be worn unbuttoned, as I styled mine here.

I was actually inspired to create this outfit by the model on the website, in the charcoal grey cardigan.

I’ll admit, I didn’t think of wearing this cardigan unbuttoned until I saw this picture, and I certainly didn’t think about pairing it with wide leg jeans.

Which brings me to my next point, how to style cardigans for winter 2023-24.

How to Style Cardigans for Winter 2024

Just as cardigan styles have evolved over the past few seasons, denim silhouettes have also changed a lot since October 2020.

Treasure & Bond cardigan (S) // Paige Anessa (29) – on sale // Marc Fisher boots (8) –  on sale // Jenny Bird earrings & necklace // Gucci crossbody (similar for less)

I love how these wide leg ankle jeans with pointed toe ankle boots update this classic cardigan. These are the Paige Anessa, and the denim is super soft and comfortable.

They have a 27″ inseam with a 22 1/2″ leg opening, and a high 11 1/2″ front rise, and they happen to be on sale right now!

Also note, I followed my tips #2 and #5 from How To Wear Cardigans Without Looking Frumpy. My under layer is both form-fitting, and it shows some skin at the neckline, which is slimming, especially when wearing a more relaxed cardigan on top.

Here are a few more cardigan outfits I’ve styled recently that I feel look current for winter 2023-2024.

Some of these were quick try-ons, so they aren’t all accessorized the way I would prefer, but I like the combination of sweater styles and denim silhouettes and footwear.

This is fun for a casual holiday party or dinner out, with the embellished button cardigan and inky black trouser jeans.

Halogen embellished button cardigan (S) // PAIGE Leenah trouser jeans (29) // Marc Fisher Ulani boots (8) – on sale

I love the unique herringbone pattern in this Splendid cardigan, although it seems to be selling out. I wore this with light wash blue jeans and sneakers, to dress it down, but it’s also cute with black jeans and loafers, as I wore the one above.

Splendid cardigan (S) – on sale at Saks & Nordstrom // MOTHER Dazzler (29) // P448 sneakers (39) // silver hoops

This stripe cardigan is super soft and has such a pretty color palette, and I like how it looks both buttoned and unbuttoned with the wider leg jeans.

While this may not be as classically flattering as some of the other combinations, it has an effortlessly-chic, slouchy look that I like.

I’d like to try this with black boots, though. Along with my dark hair, they would create a bookend to the look, as well as coordinate with the black in the stripes and tank.

Splendid Kendall (S) – on sale at Splendid // similar jeans // Dolce Vita booties (8.5) // black tank // Jenny Bird earrings & necklace

And here are those same jeans with black lug sole boots and a fun fair isle cardigan in shades of black, grey and white.

Fair isle is having a moment this season, and fair isle cardigans are a nice alternative to the solid colors that ruled the day for so long. Plus, they help keep the outfit looking current, as long as they’re styled with modern-looking footwear and denim silhouettes.

Style Tip: With a style as classic as a fair isle print, keep the other elements of the outfit modern to keep it from looking dated.

Design History cardigan (S) – on sale at Saks // white tank (M) // similar PAIGE denim (29) // Steve Madden Chelsea Boots (8)

And finally, this super luxe ribbed v-neck cashmere cardigan is a classic with a twist. I love the contrasting buttons and side slit detail, and the knit is such a nice quality.

I love the combination of the oatmeal knit and light wash denim, and I wore a white tank underneath to keep the color palette light and low contrast.

The sporty sneakers give it a fun, playful appeal, but I’ve also worn this same outfit with taupe loafer mules (similar here) for a slightly more elevated look and feel.

I hope this post gives you some modern styling ideas for your cardigans this season! And if you’re looking to add a few more current cardigan options to your closet, I rounded up some of my favorites below.

How to Style a Cardigan 4 Different Ways

As the temperature drops and the leaves start to fall, I start reaching for all things warm and cozy. Hot coffees replace ice lattes, throw blankets make their way out of the linen closet. And cardigans start making their way back into my wardrobe. Always there when I need them, bringing extra warmth to my outfits when I need it most.

A cardigan is truly a girl’s best friend. Over the years I’ve had lots of different favorites. Even now, I basically live in my Alex Mill striped cardigan (which conveniently doubles as a regular old sweater). With so many cuts, textures and patterns to choose from, I’ve set out to write a sort of cardigan primer.

Herein is a list of (some of) the different kinds of cardigans, general styling tips, and some outfit ideas! I hope to do my beloved cardigans justice.

How To Style A Cardigan

Different Types Of Cardigans:

Long cardigans, or dusters – These are super cozy! I see them styled casually most often and that’s how I like to style them as well. They’re just effortlessly cool and seriously comfy.

Short cardigans – This more cropped style looks really good with high waisted pieces. It’s a very modern cut, and if you’re a big fan of hooded cardigans, you can easily find hooded versions of short cardigans as well.

Wrap cardigans – Wrap cardigans are characterized by their flowy silhouette and lack of any sort of closure. They have less structure than, say, a chunky knit. This is a good option to wear over a form fitting dress or pencil skirt. Because these often come with belts, they are similar to belted cardigans. Just a bit more open and flowy.

Kimono cardigan – The more laid back cousin of the wrap cardigan! The fun aunt really. Kimonos are usually lightweight and flowy. Less Fall and more Spring, although you could definitely get away with it during any season when paired with the right layering pieces.

Knit cardigans – Another very cozy option, knit cardigans add a lot of extra warmth. Very practical, and very stylish. They can really add texture to a look as well, with lots of variations like cable knit, knitted wool, or fair isle.

What To Wear With Cardigans

I am a firm believer that there is a cardigan for every look. Seriously, it gets cold in Chicago. We need all the extra layers we can get! Even if you don’t live in a particularly cold climate, a cardigan can really come in handy. They’re even great to grab on a balmy summer night. If you pick the right piece you could really wear a cardigan with anything.

My favorite way to wear them is over a t- shirt and jeans – a cute cardigan can really bring a casual outfit together. It’s also fun to try layering them over my summer wardrobe! Which, by the way, is an easy way to lengthen the lifespan of your favorite dress or tank top.

Then, of course, wearing other Fall staples, like boots or a scarf with your cardigan will really enhance the look! So many options, so many opportunities to express yourself through style!

Tops To Wear Under Cardigans

Even though cardigans are super versatile, there are some tips you can keep in mind to make the most of each of your cardigan outfits! Here are some examples:

Let’s say you’re having a classic white tee and jeans day. A cool cardigan with a bold, all over print can really elevate your look.

A blouse with a statement collar looks super cute under a simpler, solid colored cardi. And, a blouse with a mock or turtleneck calls for a cardigan with a more rounded neckline.

Lastly, a tank top or camisole can be a good choice for pretty much any of these! Get ready for a ton of mixing and matching as you add more and more cardigans to your wardrobe!

4 Outfits With Cardigans

Long, Textured Cardigan with Jeans

I love the textural details of this cardigan! It’s so cozy, and the perfect cardigan for these colder, winter months. Honestly, it’s like a blanket you can wear! It’s definitely a statement piece, so I would wear it to dress up more casual outfits.

When I say casual, I mean a pair of skinny jeans and a gray or black t-shirt. I like the idea of a more dressy, heeled shoe with this cardigan – makes for a good mixture of preppy and casual! But, you can definitely still rock this look with some classic sneakers.

2-in-1 Button-Back Crewneck Sweater/Cardigan

This Alex Mill cardigan is a major favorite of mine. You might have seen me wearing it on Instagram, and you’ve definitely noticed it all over my blog. I just love the nautical feel of the stripes. And the really neat thing about this cardigan is that it transforms! Turn it around and it becomes a regular sweater.

For this outfit, however, we’re featuring the buttons. So to style this cardi, grab a button down and some straight leg jeans. A pair of mules will keep the outfit dressy but casual.

Chunky Cardigan Over Dress

A chunky cable knit cardigan is a winter wardrobe must. This navy blue one by Tuckernuck has a more elegant silhouette than your average granny sweater, with its high neckline and bishop sleeves. And the gold button details are just too cute!

This cardigan is perfect for layering a more glam look, like a slip dress and a pair of glittery heels. Complete the look with an evening bag and some matching jewelry and you have an excellent party outfit.

Open Front Cardigan With A Casual Tee

An open front cardigan is much more relaxed and casual than the other options I’ve listed. To style an open front cardi, just throw it on over a pair of jeans and your favorite t-shirt. I love this one from Nordstrom, especially when paired with cute matching tan boots.

How to Wear Long Cardigans

Dressing for transitional weather can be a real struggle, whether the temps are cool and crisp in the fall or moody in the spring. One item that I always have in high rotation during these times is a good cardigan—particularly long cardigans.

For those in between temperatures that are too cool to go sans jacket yet not cold enough for a coat, cardigans offer the perfect solution. I have always loved the look of a long cardigan with jeans and sneakers, leggings and boots, skirts and loafers, and even with dresses. However, I know that the length of long cardigans can make them a bit tricky to style.

If you’re looking for some ideas on how to wear long cardigans, you’re in the right spot. Below, I’m outlining exactly how to put together a long cardigan outfit, as well as sharing some of the cardigans I’m eyeing for the season ahead.

How to Wear Long Cardigans

1. With a Skirt and Loafers

I tend to reach for long cardigans a lot during the fall and spring, and pairing one with a mini skirt and penny loafers is both practical and chic. Adding a pop of color with your cardigan is also a fool-proof way to give your look some more personality (and the pink cardi I’m wearing below is just so much fun!)

Balance the rest of your outfit with a simple black skirt, bodysuit or tank top, and a pair of chunky loafers. If loafers aren’t really your thing, sandals or white sneakers would work just as well.

2. With a Loungewear Set

Because long cardigans are so comfortable, they’re a no-brainer to wear along with a lounge set. I reach for this outfit combo a lot when I’m traveling because it’s easy to throw on but still makes you feel and look put together. Oh, and if you really want to elevate your loungewear outfit, try going with a monochromatic look—it makes everything look more luxe.

3. With a Dress

One of my go-to outfits during the changing seasons is a dress with a cardigan thrown over it. It’s ideal because it will keep you warm and cozy in the morning but you can take the cardigan off if it gets hot throughout the day.

I typically reach for long dresses when I’m styling them with a long cardigan, but you could really go with any length!

4. With Jeans and Sneakers

Ideal for everyday wear, jeans, sneakers, and a long cardigan make for the perfect trio. You could easily slip into this outfit before heading out to run errands, go to soccer games, or meet friends for coffee. It also transitions so easily from day to night, which is a win in my book.

Plus, if you have somewhere nicer to go at the end of the day, just swap your sneakers for some flats or heels.

5. With Tall Boots

I have always loved a good pair of leather pants. They’re so easy to wear with a variety of closet staples and they are so comfortable. In this outfit, I paired them with a white blouse, tall boots, and a cream colored cardigan. This feels like a classic fall uniform that would look cute on anyone—and for any occasion.

6. With an Oversized Shirt and Leggings

If you want an outfit that’s extremely easy to put together yet chic, this is it. I paired an oversized shirt with leather leggings (like these), tall boots, and a long duster cardigan, and let me tell you, it’s the coziest outfit ever.

7. With a Sweater and Winter Boots

For when the season really takes a turn, this outfit will keep you toasty without sacrificing your style. Even though a cardigan is technically a type of sweater, you can still wear a shorter sweater underneath one. This will be your new go-to if you need a look that offers multiple layers—accessorize with a beanie and scarf for added warmth!
